Writing for children is not a hectic task but too much responsibility is added to it as the onus of shaping the character and future of children normally depends on the literature that tiny children read. Parents are also very cautious in selecting books for children. The book under the review Bal Sahitya Ke Pratiman is a unique collection of critique on literature for children. The book is divided into three parts Abhigyan, Pratiman and Anuman. The first part contains the meaning of literature for children, form of critique on literature for children, its journey and its chief pillars. The second part deals with the genres of literature, poetry, short stories, plays and other genres and the third one discusses on the future expectations from literature for children. Dr. Nagesh Pandey has resolved several puzzling questions, which are beneficial for children, parents, teachers and editors because materialistic culture, ‘decreasing human values, electronic media and enormous syllabi’ has endangered the utility of literature for children and even children’s existence itself which turn the innocent saplings into fully grown man with acute agility to manage their own interests. The meaning of Bal Sahitya with its aims, significance, its kinds, its subjects, different genres of Bal Sahitya, on the basis of its promotion, its history and directions for present literature for children are well written with ample definitions of Bal sahitya and its shape harmonizing present scenario.
The second chapter ‘Bal Sahitya Sameeksha Ka Swaroop’ comprises of pros and cones and points worth mentioning by critics of Bal Sameeksha, magazines and creative works as the basis of criticism on Bal Sahitya, its significance, responsibility of a critic and recommends the undiscriminating criticism of Bal Sahitya. The third chapter ‘Bal Sahitya Sameeksha Ki Vikas Yatra’ covers the origin of Bal Sahitya Sameeksha, its primary form, its new dimensions discussing the eminent critics of Bal Sahitya. The forth chapter ‘Bal Sahitya Sameeksha Ke Stambh’ delineates a brief bio-data of towering editors, researchers and critics like Lalli Prasad Pandey, Krishan Vinayak Fadke,Jyotsna Dwivedi, Asha Gangopadhyaya, Dr. Devendra Dutt Tiwari, Manohar Verma, Dr. Mastram Kapoor ‘Urmil’, Dr. Rashtrabandhu, Dr. Shriprakash, Jay Prakash Bharti, Vishnukant Pandey, Dr. Chakradhar Nalin, Dr. Rohitashv Asthana, Dr. Prakash Manu, Dr. Om Prakash Singhal, Dr. Surendra Vikram, Dr. Ratanlal Sharma, Vinod Chandra Pandey, and Dr. Shakuntla Kalra. The fifth chapter ‘Bal Kavya Ke Pratiman’ is a succinctly written article on poetry for children by categorization according to the age of children. Particularly dramatic verse, puzzle verse and free verse for children are suffused with emotions of love, nature, humour and enthusiasm encompassing moral in them. Poetry for children is also excellently measured on the scales of versification like language, figures of speech and style. Not only this, the need and significance of poetry for adolescents is also nicely drawn out with ample images wrapped in symbols, imaginations, language, realism, psychology and thoughts.
The sixth chapter ‘Bal Katha Ke Pratiman’ sets the scales for writing good, simple and effective stories for children which can also be of sufficient utility for children even in the changing scenario of commercialization, materialization and having no time at all. Although the same scales are prescribed for stories for children as for adults, the elements that make a difference are only content and language. Again, the adolescents are not separated and contents are enhanced according to their mental level. The seventh chapter ‘Bal Natak Ke Pratiman’ starts with an undertone of philosophy and finally differentiates between play and one act play. The psychological context of the play is more emphasized rather simply setting a story with dialogues as it doubly influences its little subjects firstly as a reader and secondly as spectators and usually children and adolescents are much inclined to see rather reading. The eighth chapter ‘Anya Vidhano Ke Pratiman’ makes the literature for children more comprehensive in the forms of travelogue, interview, essay, biography, autobiography, diary, epistles and memoire. But surprisingly the last chapter ‘Bal Sahitya Ka Bhavishya’ places a question mark on all the labour done for children playing under the sky of new millennium who are considered innocent from a long time. But the problem again arises that we cannot offer Kamayni or Godan to little children. For this, it is upto parents and guardians that how much they can inspire their children to read more books than taking a dip in the sea of fashion and modern rat race.
Thus, the book is of sincere notice for teachers, creative writers, critics, patents, guardians and editors. If they follow these set rules of writings for children, not only the literature of children but also the humanity, society, nation and even the world can be prosper into an El Dorado, which is a concept of the mind till now.
Kudos to Dr. Nagesh Pandey for placing a milestone in the field of literature for children.
